Metro, which is sponsoring the contest. Based in Wilkes-Barre, Penn., Metro manufactures stores and transport equipment in healthcare, foodservice and commercial markets.
Commercial kitchen operators understand that space issues can have a negative impact not only on their kitchen staff’s efficiency, but on cleanliness and food quality as well. With the launch of FE&S’ Kitchen Storage Makeover Contest, one facility will receive a storage makeover, courtesy ofNow through Jan. 31, 2018, foodservice operators and their supply chain partners can submit existing back-of-house storage areas at www.fesmag.com/ksm. Submissions can include dry storage, refrigerated storage, sink and prep areas and other related storage spaces. Eligible entries invited from all commercial foodservice operations, including: independent restaurants, chain restaurants, and noncommercial operators such as schools, colleges and universities, business and industry dining, healthcare, correctional and others.
“We are looking for the most deserving operation to put some well-deserved organization into the back of the house,” says Maureen Slocum, publisher of FE&S magazine. “Imagine Extreme Makeover meets the commercial kitchen. We were delighted that Metro came to us to pitch the idea of creating a unique contest to better serve the foodservice industry.”
“We see many well run and successful commercial kitchens that struggle with optimizing storage and workflow," says Gerry Kenlon, global director of strategic accounts at Metro. “Kitchens are often required to support twice the volume for which they were originally designed, sometimes even more. Making that space more productive is what we do best, and we take great pride in providing this service to the deserving winner.”
Each nomination should include up to ten images of the storage area in need of overhaul, along with a description of why this storage area needs a makeover.
A panel of judges chosen by FE&S will select the winner in February. FE&S will announce the winner in March, which is when Metro representatives will provide a storage and productivity assessment, followed by a makeover of the winning operation’s storage facility. The makeover may include shelving, workstations, wall shelving, worktables, custom configurations, track systems and more — all courtesy of Metro. The winner will also appear in an upcoming issue of FE&S.
