Cleaning and Maintenance Considerations for Food Processors

Failure to clean and maintain food processors will lead to food buildup under the blade and bowl. This causes an overworked and overheated motor — and a shorter service life.

Use a mild detergent to clean food processors after each use. Cleaning includes removing the lid, the blade assembly and bowl, which typically has a twist lock. Some manufacturers recommend washing lids by hand.

At least once a month, check the food processor’s aired inlet in the base for food buildup on the louvers. Buildup can restrict airflow and compromise the motor.

Liquid in the shaft can cause issues. Immediately wipe up major spills at the base of the unit or near the motor housing. Never hose down or submerge the food processor’s base in water, which can cause the unit to break down.

A seal where the motor shaft joins the blade assembly needs regular lubrication. Operators should regularly check this area and replace the seal as necessary. Lubrication can be food-grade grease, vegetable oil or mineral oil. The seal can last up to eight months, less if neglected.

Operators should not use sharp objects to switch food processors on and off as it can puncture button safety covers. Don’t overload the unit or use harsh cleaners, which can impede alignment and overall operation.

If the food processor won’t turn on or turns on intermittently, there may be an interlock problem, or the magnet in the bowl or lid may have been displaced. Either case requires service. A unit may be inoperable due to a blade assembly that is worn and not aligning properly.

Manufacturers recommend only loading three-fourths of the bowl; excess food volume can wear out the motor. Using the pulse setting lets food processors run at optimum speed, provides control and allows short bursts of power without overprocessing.
