Metropolitan State Hospital Wins FE&S' 2012 Facility Design Competition

Café 5555 and Q earn honorable mention.

Foodservice Equipment & Supplies named Metropolitan State Hospital in Norwalk, Calif. the winner of its Facility Design Project of the Year Competition. Earning honorable mentions in this year's competition are Q at the Hyatt Regency Riverwalk in San Antonio, and Café 5555 at Banner Thunderbird Medical Center in Glendale, Ariz.

The facility design consultants for Metropolitan State Hospital are Webb-Dewco Food Facility Consultants; James Webb, principal, Webb Design, Tustin, Calif; Jim Donahoe, principal, senior designer, Dewco Food Facility Consultants, Whittier, Calif.

Metropolitan State Hospital is a central kitchen with six satellite rethermalization kitchens. The central kitchen occupies 27,000 square feet and serves 2,100 meals per day, in addition to food items for nutrition breaks. The building budget for design and construction was $30.5 million, which included $20.5 million for the construction of the kitchen and renovation of the satellite kitchens. The equipment investment was $5.5 million.

In selecting this project as the winner, FE&S' judges felt it did a good job of replacing an older, more problematic facility and, in doing so, lowered costs by using less space and labor. This project, which earned LEED Gold status, features a layout that allows staff to work well within HAACP's time and temperature protocols, according to the judges.

FE&S will present its Facility Design Project of the Year Award during its 2012 Dealer of the Year and Industry Awards Gala, which takes place May 5 at the Chicago Ritz-Carlton. FE&S will feature additional coverage of Metropolitan State Hospital, Q and Café 5555 in its May 2012 magazine.
