Johnny Rockets Sold to Fat Burger Parent

In a deal valued at $25 million, multiconcept operator FAT (Fresh. Authentic. Tasty.) Brands will acquire Johnny Rockets from Sun Capital Partners.

The transaction is expected to close in September.

Johnny Rockets was founded in 1986 in Los Angeles and is known known for its 1950s diner style decor. The 325-unit chain the chain serves freshly made, classic burgers and hand-spun real ice cream shakes. In 2016, Johnny Rockets introduced a brand refresh that honored the chain’s heritage while providing some design flexibility.

Other restaurant chains that operate under the FAT Brands corporate umbrella include Fatburger, Bonanza and Ponderosa Steakhouse, Buffalo’s, Elevation BurgerHurricane Grill and Wings and Yalla Mediterranean. With the acquisition of Johnny RocketsFAT Brands will have more than 700 franchised and company owned restaurants and annual system-wide sales exceeding $700 million, per a company release.
