National Restaurant Association’s Certification Program Sets Standards for the Industry

To help restaurant operators recruit, upskill and retain employees, the National Restaurant Association has developed ServSuccess. This career development program features three levels of professional certification, online training and assessments.

ServSuccess’ components include: professional certifications for restaurant professional, supervisor and manager levels; online learning suites with content designed to fit into individuals’ work schedules and interactive study guides to promote learning and retention. In addition to education and certification offerings, ServSuccess will help employees understand the type of roles available in the restaurant industry, assess their readiness for these roles, and chart a path toward achieving their desired career goals. The program is suitable for use by a variety of operators, such as independent and multiunit restaurants, and any type of establishment from quick-service to fine dining, per the National Restaurant Association.

Employee turnover costs restaurant operators about $2,000 per front-of-the-house and back-of-the-house employee and almost $15,000 per manager position, according to research from TDn2K.

“Talent and experience are a valuable resource the industry can't afford to lose,” said Sherman L. Brown, executive vice president of training and certification for the National Restaurant Association. “Better training is better for business, so ServSuccess provides companies with a turnkey, customizable mix of products that build the people who build their business. And for those professionals ready to take their hustle to the next level, ServSuccess is here to serve them.”
