Refrigerated Display Cases: An Overview

Refrigerated display cases are available in a variety of configurations with a wide range of options and refrigeration system choices.

Refrigerated display cases are a broad equipment category that can encompass pass-thrus, roll-ins and even undercounter units.

When it comes to merchandising, open air display cases offer grab and go convenience over glass door models because there's no barrier between the customer and product. By comparison, closed display cases provide greater energy efficiency.

Different types of refrigeration units are available, including a top-mounted condensing unit and evaporator coil; top-mounted condensing unit with interior evaporator coil; bottom-mounted condensing unit with interior evaporator coil; and remote and self-contained refrigeration systems.

Refrigerated display cases are usually constructed of stainless steel, aluminum or painted cabinets with stainless steel interiors. Interior shelves are epoxy-coated, chrome-plated or stainless steel.

One-, two- and three-door units are available with either solid or glass doors. Display case dimensions can range from 5 to 80 cu. ft. in various heights.

Generally, one-section reach-ins are between 16 and 30 cu. ft.; two-section units are between 30 and 52 cu. ft. and three-section models range from 68 to 80 cu. ft. Display cases are typically between 4 and 7 feet long.

Utility requirements range from 115 volts, 1 Phase, 15 amp to 208–230 volts, 3-phase, 30 amp.

Standard features include interior lighting; shelving, legs or casters; an external thermometer; and self-closing doors with lift-off hinges.

There are a number of options for these units, such as half solid or half glass doors; pan racks; extra shelving; digital or dial thermometers; temperature monitoring and alarms; LED, fluorescent or incandescent lights; pass-thru configurations; and leg kits in lieu of casters.

New display case innovations include state-of-the-art electronic controls in addition to compressors and fan motors that provide higher efficiency operation.
