Sysco Agrees to Buy U.S. Foods
In a $3.5 billion deal, broadline distributor Sysco Corporation has reached an agreement to acquire US Foods. Bill DeLaney, Sysco president and chief executive officer, will lead the combined company, which will operate under the Sysco name with its headquarters in Houston, Texas. When the deal closes, Sysco will have estimated annual sales of $65 billion.

John Dawson Named President of The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf
John Dawson will become president and chief executive officer for The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, effective January 1, 2014. Dawson replaces Mel Elias, who served in that role since 2008 and will assume a position on the company’s board of directors.

MAFSI Business Barometer Reports Growth Across the Board
The MAFSI Business Barometer reported a 4.5 percent increase in foodservice equipment and supplies sales compared to the third quarter of 2012. Reps project a 4.1 percent sales increase for the fourth quarter and remain on track to reach their projected growth rate of 4.7 percent for 2014, according to the Manufacturers Agents for the Foodservice Industry (MAFSI).
Remembering B&G Supply’s Gloria Powers
Gloria Powers, 68 years old, passed away on Dec. 3. Powers spent her entire career in the foodservice industry and in 1985 she founded B&G Restaurant Supply, a Pittsfield, Mass.-based foodservice equipment dealership with her late husband, Bernie.
