Caribou Sold for $340 Million
In a deal valued at $340 million, Joh. A. Benckiser Group (JAB) has agreed to acquire Caribou Coffee Company, Inc. Upon completion of the transaction, Caribou will continue to operate as an independent company with its own brand, management team and growth strategy. Caribou will remain based in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Chef’s Toys Acquires Star Restaurant Equipment & Supply
Chef’s Toys, a Fountain Valley, Calif.-based foodservice equipment and supplies dealership, has acquired the assets of Star Restaurant Equipment & Supply Co., a Van Nuys, Calif.-based dealership.
Kaplan Takes Flight on Eagle Group’s Sales Team
Shari Kaplan is the new vice president of eastern regional sales for The Eagle Group, a Delaware-based foodservice equipment and supplies manufacturer.
UFood Files for Chapter 11
UFood Restaurant Group, Inc. filed a voluntary petition under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code. Other members of the UFood group, including its affiliates and franchised stores in Massachusetts, Ohio, Texas, Utah and Maryland, have not filed for protection.
Reps’ Outlook Mixed
After posting a solid 4.3 percent growth rate for the third fiscal quarter of 2012, members of the Manufacturers’ Agents Association for the Foodservice Industry (MAFSI) report a decline in the level of quoting and consultant activities as the year comes to a close and that contributed to their forecasting a slight decline in sales for the fourth quarter of 2012. Despite these mixed results, MAFSI members project a healthy 4.7 percent gain for 2013, according to the association’s Business Barometer study.
