Remembering Charlie Trotter

Iconic self-taught Chicago chef passes away.

World-renowned Chicago chef Charlie Trotter died on Nov. 5 at the age of 54.

During the course of his illustrious career, Trotter earned countless accolades for his culinary prowess, including being named Outstanding Chef by the James Beard Foundation in 1999. He also earned recognition for his humanitarian efforts and more. He is known for serving as a mentor to many chefs including Chicago-based Graham Elliot Bowles.

According toTrotter’s website, he received no formal culinary training. He was self-taught and known for demanding the very best from his culinary teams as they pursued excellence. He closed his iconic restaurant, Charlie Trotter’s, located in Chicago’s Lincoln Park Neighborhood, in August 2012.
